The Aurora Borealis is a captivating and iridescent finish for rhinestones that was developed by the renowned Austrian crystal manufacturer Swarovski in 1955. This shimmering effect, which takes its name from the natural light displays of the same name, was the result of a collaborative effort between Swarovski and the legendary fashion designer Christian Dior. By applying a special coating to their high-quality rhinestones, Swarovski was able to create a mesmerising finish that caught the light and shimmered with a kaleidoscope of colors, from blues and greens to golds and reds. These dazzling Aurora Borealis rhinestones quickly became a sought-after material for high-end costume jewelry in 1956 and onwards, as designers and jewelers sought to capture that captivating iridescent look. The Aurora Borealis finish proved so popular that it was widely imitated, with lesser-quality rhinestones and beads sometimes being mistaken for the genuine Swarovski article. Even today, the name "Aurora Borealis" is often used to describe any rhinestone or crystal with a similar iridescent sheen, though true Swarovski Aurora Borealis pieces are still highly prized for their superior quality and craftsmanship. The 1956 collaboration with Christian Dior serves as a useful benchmark, as any crystal or rhinestone bearing the distinctive AB finish can be confidently dated to 1956 or later based on the origins of this innovative and enchanting effect.
